One of the greatest and most addictive aspects of the rogue-like genre is constantly finding and unlocking new things. Whether they be items, abilities, weapons, or even NPCs, that feeling of getting even just a tiny bit of progress is enough motivation to play for just one more run. In UnderMine, the NPCs you can find and rescue during your exploration of the mines are extremely valuable to bring back to your hub. Missing out on them will make your experience much more difficult and slow, so follow this guide to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the NPCs needing rescue deep in the mines.
There are seven unique character NPCs to meet during your adventures in UnderMine, most of which will either become a merchant or sell you upgrades when you meet thing again in your hub.
Wayland the Blacksmith
This will be the first NPC you come across trapped in the mines, and has probably the most valuable shop in the. You will find him in The Goldmines by blowing up a wall blocking the entrance to a room with a bomb. He is where you will purchase upgrades for your damage, HP, throw damage, and how much gold you keep after death. He is also the one you will turn in any blueprints you find for permanent progression.
Baba The Alchimist
Baba is not someone you need to rescue, but rather complete a quest where you need to collect mushrooms in order to make her available as your potions merchant. She is who you will give any artifacts related to potions to, making them available to find in runs going forward, as well as buy potion related upgrades.
Lillyth
Once you make it to and defeat the Gargoyles, you will get a Master’s Key. Use this to open a secret cell hidden under a rock marked with an X in the Dungeon. She will head back to your hub and can upgrade your blessings and curses. Unlocking her also makes an alter appear on each floor of future runs that you can interact with to either remove a curse in exchange for HP, or take a random curse or blessing.
Dibble
Locked up tight on the first floor of Delvemore Dungeon, you will need two keys to unlock the gate holding Dibble. He’s not the most useful NPC, but will allow you to stock up on bombs and keys before you start are run in the mines.
Griswold, The Collector
Griswold is a secret character and quite hard to come across naturally. The only way to unlock him is to find the Dusty Book item and place it on the bookshelf behind Arkanos the Archmage. If you manage to do this, though, he will go back to the hub and take care of any eggs you find on your runs. When they eventually hatch into familiars you will be able to take them along to help you on your next run.
Black Rabbit
This NPC isn’t going to join you back in the hub, but will periodically show up during your runs. She is essentially another merchant, offering a random blueprint for 25 gold the first time you find her, and then with random trades or games afterwards. If she does show up as a shop, she won’t charge gold for items like a normal merchant, however, instead exchanging either keys, bombs, or hp for her items.
Dodson
You’ll meet Dodson fairly early on as well. He can be rescued after beating the Rockpile Mimic and using the Prisoner Key in The Goldmines. Once he’s back in the hub, he will offer to upgrade your bombs.
Those are all the unique character NPCs you can find on your journey through the mines. Not all are as important as others, but finding them all will pay off in the long run by allowing you to fully upgrade your character and unlock new items to find in the mines.
