If there is a game that’s likely to remain a cult classic for decades to come, it’s indie RPG Undertale. A combination of fantastic music, intense battles, and charming characters cements this as a pretty remarkable game. And let’s not forget the secrets. In every area in Undertale, there are more secrets than one can count.

Waterfall, which houses some of the biggest fan-favorite characters in the series such as Undyne and Napstablook, makes for a location that is truly worth exploring if you’re on the hunt for things you missed in your first playthrough.

7 Flirt With Undyne

If both Undyne and Papyrus are not killed by the player, Papyrus will try to force Undyne to befriend them. Papyrus does this by bringing the player along to his usually private cooking lesson with Undyne and then slyly and subtly jumping out of a closed window, leaving Undyne alone with her nemesis.

In an attempt to be courteous, Undyne asks the player to choose what they would like as a refreshment, giving options such as sugar, soda, tea, and oh, Undyne. Choosing the latter option will result in Undyne getting irritated at the apparent flirting. No hard feelings, maybe you’re not her type.

6 United By The Umbrella

Late into the Waterfall area lies a statue that is being rained on. The next screen has a bucket of umbrellas that the player can take from. If the player takes an umbrella, they can place it over the statue, which will produce a music-box version of the track “Undertale”, which is its own piece on the fantastic soundtrack, titled “Memory”.

However, if the player backtracks from this point to where the Nice Cream Guy is encountered, umbrella in hand, the Nice Cream Guy will give the player a monumental discount of a whole 10g. Worth it, right?

5 Annoy Temmie

Love or hate them, the Temmies are an iconic part of Undertale. If the player takes an invisible path at the south of Waterfall’s mushroom maze area, they will find themself in the wonderfully weird Temmie Village where everyone speaks like they’re 11 and have just discovered the internet. The only “building” in the Temmie Village is a shop – the Temshop to be exact. The Temshop vendor will sell Temflakes (2HP healing consumable), Temmie Armor (worth buying), and the ability to pay for the shopkeeper’s college education.

If the player charitably covers Temmie’s college expenses, then Temmie will return a graduate, complete with a mortarboard. It appears that college did wonders for Temmie’s confidence, however, as if the player refuses to sell Temmie an item that they really want, they will ditch their cutesy misspelled speech patterns and hit them with the above.

4  Lost Quiche

The first puzzle that appears in Waterfall is the bridge seed puzzle - float bridge seeds along the water from right to left to make a bridge, simple. However, there is a hidden alternative route that the player can take here by creating a bridge in the bottom right side of the room, leading to an area with a bench.

Under this bench, the player can find the Abandoned Quiche. This is a consumable item that heals 34HP on use - unfortunately, there is only one in the game. This secret is apparently based on a real-life experience of the creator Toby Fox where he too found an abandoned quiche under a bench.

3 Napstablook’s Terrible Music

Napstablook has cemented itself as one of the biggest fan favorites in the series. Whatever Toby did to make a depressed ghost with headphones so iconic, it definitely worked. In Waterfall, the player can visit Napstablook’s house and do all kinds of fun stuff, like eat an incorporeal sandwich and lie on the ground and feel like garbage. Ah, Fridays.

The star of the show here is Napstablook’s music collection, though. Listening to any of the tracks available in their house and not stopping them will lead to the player’s next encountered monsters reacting to the soundtrack and, well, they don’t seem too happy about it.

2  Mystery Man

Perhaps the secret that has garnered the most speculation in the entire game is this spooky gentleman right here. This man is W.D. Gaster. There is a very slim chance of him appearing in the game, dependent on a hidden value that a player is assigned at the start of the game being 66. As this value can range from 1-100, this is pretty dang rare.

If their value is 66, there is a small chance that a grey door will appear in a new room in Waterfall. Entering said room will greet the player with the above - a ghostly black and white figure with no collision. Interacting with Gaster will cause him to disappear, and that’ll be that. There’s nothing else. Throughout the game, there are clues to his identity, but nothing official has been put out by Toby Fox, making fans all the more curious.

1 Make Undyne More Difficult

If the player is feeling particularly masochistic, they might make use of this secret. During the incredibly intense fight with Undyne, the player can choose to ‘challenge’ her in the ‘act’ menu. This has the fun effect of making the attacks she sends hurtling toward you even faster, and this stacks three times.

Considering Undyne is one of the most terrifying bosses in the game (and the most difficult boss at that point), this secret could definitely be shown off for bragging rights.
