A Unity Developer has posted a rather inventive creation on Reddit that shows off a gun designed specifically for rock melting.

The obliterating gun in question appears to be called ‘The Sun 3000’, as written on the side of the weapon, and produces a brilliant display of light blue plasma from its core. The main body of the gun is light grey in color with two transparent panels on the side that glows blue from the plasma within when it is being shot. The setting is a rocky terrain, where some rocks resemble granite, sitting on an island by the distinguishable ocean sitting around the rocks. Once the plasma is shot out from the gun and makes contact with the towering rocks it starts to cut away at them. The rocks reach such intense levels of heat that they appear to go on fire for a couple of seconds and produce a lava effect as the residue of the damaged rocks pours down the side of its natural structure.

Animator FickleSwimming has only just got started on social media, but what a way to enter the gaming community by showing off this work of art. As his creation is not part of any game, many fans of the design on Twitter thought that this method of collecting resources or manipulating terrain may be a very cool mechanic to have within an exploration game. It was pointed out that FickleSwimming was yet to apply the physics of such a structure that would allow the top of the rock to fall if the bottom were to be cut away. Shooter game Red Faction was also mentioned as fans pegged it as a possible successor to the 2001 series.

FickleSwimming created the gun using Shader Graph and VFX Graph, which allow animators to author shading graphs whilst building them complete with the ability to see the creation in real-time. Unity’s Visual Effect Graph lets you create pretty much anything through its node-based technology to create real-time effects. FickleSwimming’s ingenuity when creating the weapon has caught the attention of developing enthusiasts.
