This week, Virtual Realms announced they are ready to start closed beta testing within the month for Warhammer: Odyssey – a hotly anticipated mobile MMORPG. Warhammer: Odyssey thrusts players into the “Old World” of Warhammer Fantasy, created by tabletop miniatures juggernaut Games Workshop. The Old World era precedes the current Age of Sigmar timeline wherein current Games Workshop fantasy miniatures do battle. Thus, Warhammer: Odyssey will look comfortably familiar to tabletop players who rolled dice amidst Warhammer Fantasy miniatures between 1983 and 2018, but might be unexplored territory for new players.
The first wave of potential explorers will be picked from highly-active participants on the Virtual Realms forums, Discord, and the official Reddit site.
Once selected, testers can create a character from six playable options:
High Elf Archmage
High Elf Shadow Warrior
Human Witch Hunter
Human Warrior Priest
Dwarf Slayer
Dwarf Engineer
Players can team up with friends or a Mercenary Company to challenge the forces of Chaos as it threatens to enshroud the Old World in darkness and despair. Lore-rich locations like Marienburg, The Wasteland, and Drakwald Forest will provide set-pieces for adventure. Or, as in the case of all beta tests, arenas for bug-hunting.
Beta testers will find no option to auto-play their way through the experience; Virtual Realms’ design goal is a “PC-like experience on the go.”
Virtual Realms brings several years of MMORPG experience to the table. The Thailand-based company currently manages the popular Celtic Heroes Android and iOS game. Still active since it’s release in 2011, Celtic Heroes continues to have regular updates and an active user forum. If Celtic Heroes is anything to go off of, Games Workshop’s fantasy IP should be in good hands, boding well for the longevity of Warhammer: Odyssey.
Presently there is no announced release date, however, closed beta tests are always a good milestone on the road to completion, so fire up the forges – you may be slaying Morrslieb’s demons soon.
