Soulborn, the upcoming indie RPG for next-gen consoles, just got a new trailer showing off it’s closed alpha.

The next-gen consoles are coming. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X promised to be a quantum leap forward in gaming, defeating all current-gen PCs while boasting full 4K graphics. Solid-state hard drives will eliminate loading times and allow games to install in minutes rather than hours. It’s an exciting time to be a gamer.

And it’s also an exciting time to be an indie developer. Pixelmad Studios out of Germany is already getting in on the action with their brand new action RPG, Soulborn, which is set to arrive along with the next-generation hardware.

Soulborn takes inspiration from a lot of sources, but the biggest one is easily the Legend of Zelda. Take one look at the alpha trailer and you’ll see a Norse version of Link running around, swinging his sword, and throwing barrels at enemies. Besides the very Breath of the Wild-like open-world RPG gameplay, Skyrim is another big influence as the game takes liberally from Norse mythology.

In Soulborn, you play as Brynjar Townshiled, a Soulborn demigod in the world of Midgard. You’ve somehow been bestowed with Mjölnir, Thor’s magic hammer, which can also conveniently turn into a sword or a bow depending on how you plan to engage the enemy. Your quest is to defeat Nidhöggr and prevent the end of the world (or Ragnarok, as the Vikings used to call it).

You’ll find dungeons, monsters, puzzles, crafting for armor and potions, and of course, combat. Take a look at the video below to see what you’ll be in for.

Currently, Soulborn is in closed alpha with just two dungeons able to be explored, but you can see what there is to see by going to Soulborn’s Discord channel and requesting a key. Pixelmad plans to add more content as they finish it.
