Super Evil Megacorp has announced that the forthcoming Catalyst Black, a team-based, battleground shooter, will launch in early access on August 12. The shooter, which was first teased in May, follows the studio’s a free-to-play, session-based, multiplayer online battle arena game Vainglory.

Catalyst Black, which features ten-player teams in a range of drop-in drop-out modes, hopes to “set a new bar for mobile gaming.” The developers, who have integrated new upgrades to the studio’s EVIL engine technology in terms of graphics, performance, and authorability, have attempted to use their Vainglory experience to enhance the new game’s design and technology.

Each player is given a selection of weapons and abilities and can draw on the powers of ancient masks, which allow them to transform into primal gods from an alternate realm. Set in a world of mystery and magic, Catalyst Black enables players to play across an array of maps and game modes while amassing, upgrading, and customizing weapons and gear.

Although Catalyst Black will be released first across mobile platforms, players can use physical controllers since the game has been built to be cross-platform ready. The new game’s exclusive drop-in, drop-out (DIDO) design allows players to join a friend’s game by simply tapping on their name. Solo players can also drop in on matches in progress or leave matches underway without any penalty. Super Evil Megacorp wanted to encourage participation in the gaming experience with a progressive multiplayer design by allowing players to play anywhere, any time.

The game’s playstyle is determined by the weapons and abilities players choose. By amassing, upgrading and customizing gear, players can hunt opponents as long-range snipers, short-range assassins, or by supporting their team as a tanky healer. With teams of ten as well as game modes that combine team combat with tactical objectives like seizing the enemy flag or eliminating neutral monsters, Catalyst Black has been developed as an advanced battleground shooter that enables players to display their mechanical and strategic decision-making skills in large scale battles.

Early access to Catalyst Black will be iOS only. To sign up, players can visit the Secret Service to claim a spot on the battlefield.
