Valheim is a survival game with a classic take on the genre. It is easy to miss what made this game so special to so many people, especially when it is hard to explain the things that make it different from its competition. Like many other games of the genre, Valheim demands a lot of exploration and grinding, but it is also met with an innovative use of its graphical resources to create a fairy-tale-like atmosphere.

The game is genuinely interesting to explore, the procedurally generated maps look fantastic, and the world feels like a never-ending adventure. Still, there will always be Reddit users with unusual takes about the game, even if they love it.

10 Going MMORPG Would Have Been A Better Approach

Most Valheim players like the game just the way it is, but some want it to have the same that other games have. The game has procedurally generated maps and a sense of wonder and discovery that comes with not knowing exactly what is next, but Reddit user u/PaffVenture believes that Valheim would be better with raids and a guild system.

Although one might think that what he states is a good idea, many aspects of the game would most likely be lost due to a shared map and constant knowledge of how the world is in other areas.

9 Valheim Is Boring

The game is considered a great game to fans of the survival genre. It has received high scores from multiple established reviewers, but nothing pleases everybody. Reddit user u/fiascolan_ai says that stopping the action to grind and farm every 2 minutes is boring.

Although it might be true that this does not appeal to everybody, it is also true that no genre appeals to all people. That is true even to sub-genres since there are JRPG players who are not fond of action RPGs and vice versa.

8 The Game Feels Dated

Valheim does have a creative use of its limited visual resources, but it wasn’t enough for some people. Although most players of the game are satisfied with the art of the game, the low-resolution textures and low polygon-count scenario did bother some people.

That was the case for Reddit user u/StartingFresh2020, who voiced how the game felt like it was made in 2005. He does have a point, though. The game does not have the amazing looks that modern games usually have. However, Minecraft taught us that it was never needed to be a hit, even though some players use shader mods to improve its graphics.

7 There Should Be A Way To Teleport Ores

Not everybody has 20 to 30 hours to dedicated to a demanding game like Valheim, which causes those people to dislike many aspects of the survival genre that please hardcore players. Carrying ores around and spending many hours mining them does not sound excited to the casual gamer who has to spend most of his time working.

That’s exactly what Reddit user u/PublicRiot was talking about when he asked for teleporting ores. Even though some might disagree with him, it is easy to understand why he’d want a feature that saves him some time.

6 The Boss Battles Are Not Fun

For many people, the boss battles are one of the great things that make Valheim one of the unique survival games. They look great within the standards of the game, and they are followed by great music that builds up the tension one should feel when fighting a boss.

However, Reddit user u/Enaos stated that Boss battles are not fun. And at first, players might find his opinions weird. However, this Reddit user seems to find the bosses themselves fun. The criticism here is regarding what surrounds them. Enaos said that “It is a bit stupid to have to die in a loop to burst the boss with the corpsrun buff which lets us take no damage.”

5 The Game Is Too Forgiving

Perhaps not being as punishing as other survival games was one of the things that made Valheim successful. Although this is generally seen as a good thing by many players, there are those who believe it ruins the challenge.

Reddit user u/Kiwipai finds the game too forgiving. The argument is made around the fact that one can even die multiple times before retrieving a body without worrying about losing resources. The same goes for how deconstructing just returns the invested resources and destroyed equipment just gets deconstructed.

4 Valheim Is Overrated

It is clear that even though it is successful, Valheim is not a game that changes gaming or leaves a long-lasting impression. And even though it is considered a good game by many, it is far from being mind-blowing. However, it does not mean the game isn’t fun.

Reddit user u/Jobber19 finds the game overrated, though. To the Reddit user, Valheim’s success is directly tied to the lack of better games to compete with it. Jobber19 mentioned that “This game is blowing up primarily because of the covid lockdown and so many other games disappointing.”

3 The Built-In System Is A Bad Thing

Valheim is not a game that punishes cheaters. In fact, it is quite the opposite. The game gives players access to the console and has built-in cheat codes that anyone can use. They allow players to mess around and test the game’s limit. Nobody has to use it, but the temptation is certainly there.

And that’s why Reddit user u/RHYM3NOC3RROS finds the build-in cheat system a bad idea. The argument made by this person simple. When watching someone playing, this Reddit user is constantly wondering if that player cheated at some point.

2 The Combat Is Not Balanced

As a survival game, Valheim might be a bit punishing when it comes to combat. Before being ready to face a foe, players have to make sure they have all the required equipment and items. There is a lot of grinding in the game. Sometimes, you have to spend a lot of time mining to build a good enough armor to face a troll or some other threat.

Still, Reddit user u/Semour9 finds the game unbalanced. When expressing what he feels, Semour9 mentions that “there comes a point where the enemies are just attacking so much you run out of stamina and have nowhere to go.”

1 Plains Are Underwhelming

Valheim has many different biomes, and more are coming. It seems that there are four new biomes that we’ll get to see once the game is fully released. Either way, there are people who are not fond of every biome of the game, for different reasons.

However, not all biomes are seen the same way. Reddit user u/ThePronto8’s, for instance, finds the plains underwhelming. Although many people do not really see any problem with the plains at the current state of the game, ThePronto8 says that the biome feels dull and unfinished.
