In Valheim, players need to survive the dangers and mysteries of a mythological Norse world. They explore different environments, collect different resources, face off against hostile creatures and try and defeat deadly bosses. There are a lot of Viking and Norse mythology elements in the story and design of the game, and players love exploring and discovering these secrets.
Recently, there has been an increasing number of reports about a mysterious cloaked figure that watches players from afar and will disappear if they get close. He is holding a staff, and some have seen him with one glowing eye. As for many strange events in video games, this took Valheim’s Reddit by storm, and fans have been theorizing and discussing who this figure is since his first appearance. There are a lot of interesting fan theories online, and until there are more updates and patches in the game that addresses this mysterious stranger and reveals more of his story, it’s fun to discuss and think about these interesting theories.
7 Necromancer
A lot of players have reported that they have seen this figure for the first time in the Swamp Biome. Some have actually mistaken him with the undead ghosts of the area, wraiths. But since he doesn’t seem to be hostile, he can’t just be another undead creature that haunts the swamps.
A few fans have said that he might be the necromancer responsible for the ghosts and risen skeletons in the area. There are a few reports of players encountering him when first reaching the swamps, and seeing him standing among the walking undead and staring at the player. Since he doesn’t seem to be bothered by the undead, being a necromancer can be a valid explanation.
6 Herobrine
Minecraft fans are familiar with this name. He is a rumored figure that has been the center of fan speculation and theories for years. While there are many creepy ideas about who he is, the strangest fact about him is that there is actually no proof of him officially existing in Minecraft at all.
In many posts that have been dedicated to this cloaked figure in Valheim’s Reddit, there is the occasional fan that brings up Herobrine. While this theory seems to be somewhat out of context, but him being an easter egg to the popular creepypasta that is Herobrine, is actually an interesting take.
5 Grim Reaper
Some players have said that they encountered this mysterious figure while they were returning to their dead bodies. This has led some players to associate this figure with death in the world of Valheim, and some thinking that he is a version of the Grim Reaper.
There are some ideas that this manifestation of Grim Reaper can actually be a boss that we might fight in the future expansions of the game. While there isn’t enough evidence to support this idea other than the fact that some players encounter the figure while dead, it still is an interesting theory to consider.
4 The Developers
One of the more strange and unique theories around the cloaked figure is that he is actually one of the developers logging in the game and entering different servers to check up on players.
While this is a weird thing for the game developers to do, but it is possible. The developers might have chosen a unique way to keep an eye on the early access version of the game and spook some of the players in the meantime.
3 Harald
One player had noticed a runestone in the plains that talks about a Harald who lost an eye to the stag and needed a walking stick after fighting a drake. The description strangely matches the cloaked figure considering the walking stick and the glowing eye that some players have seen.
What makes this idea even more interesting, is that the fan who came up with this theory claims that they have seen the cloaked figure appearing near the runestone in the plains. While they don’t have any screenshots of this event or of the runestone, but it does provide an acceptable explanation for the existence of the cloaked figure.
2 Thor
Players who dig deep in the Norse mythology in the game, have said that the cloaked figure can be one of the gods keeping an eye on the world of Valheim. While the most likely suspect is Odin (who will be discussed in the next entry), some believe that this mysterious figure is the God of Thunder, Thor.
The reason for this theory is that a lot of players have seen a figure in the sky that appears during thunderstorms, and some say the two figures are the same. But some actually believe that the figure flying in the sky is Thor, and the figure appearing in the ground, is a different entity.
1 Odin
The most popular theory about the cloaked figure is that he is the Allfather, Odin himself. This theory fits perfectly with the mythology and the appearance of the figure. The masked and hooded figure is one of many names of the highest Norse god Odin, who goes through the gate between worlds of Norse cosmogony with one of their crows.
In addition, the one glowing eye that some players have seen fits perfectly with the story of Odin sacrificing one of his eyes to gain his powers. Currently, this theory is the one with the most evidence and related mythology, and even some players say that the console command “spawn Odin” will summon the cloaked figure.
