One aspect of Valheim that challenges players the most is the status effects. Some of these effects can be extremely helpful, while others can be devastating, so it is important for players to pay attention to their status effects at all times to ensure their survival.
Positive status effects usually have a criteria which the player or the player’s environment must meet in order to gain the effect. Negative effects can be prevented or players can reduce their impact using armor, consumables, or Powers.
14 Resting
The Resting Effect will provide the player with a large bonus to stamina regeneration, health regeneration, and XP gain. The player can only gain the Resting Effect when no hostiles are nearby and they are either sitting and warm or they are under both the Shelter and Fire Effects at the same time.
The player cannot, however, receive the Resting Effect if they are Wet or Burning. After receiving this effect for more than 20 seconds or longer, the player will receive the Rested Effect.
13 Rested
The Rested Effect can be gained after sleeping in a bed or if the player has the Resting Effect for 20 seconds or more. The Rested Effect gives a boost to stamina regeneration, health regeneration, and XP gain, with the duration of the boosts dependent on the comfort levels nearby, which can be increased by placing furniture in the area.
This effect also offers a boost to earned skill experience which is not dependent on comfort levels.
12 Shelter Effect
A player will gain the Shelter Effect if they are under cover, as long as 80% or more of their body is covered. Places you can shelter include under any type of roof, dense tree cover, and entrances to any location with overhead cover such as cave entrances.
The Shelter Effect is mainly used to shelter from the rain, stopping the player from gaining the Wet Effect or reducing the duration of an existing Wet Effect. But it is also one of the requirements for the Resting Effect.
11 Fire Effect
The Fire Effect is applied when the player is close to a heat source such as campfires or working smelters. This effect not only removes any Cold or Freezing Effects, but it also significantly reduces the duration of the Wet Effect.
If there are no hostiles nearby and the player is sitting close enough to a heat source to gain the Fire Effect, then they will also gain the Resting Effect.
10 Wet Effect
The Wet Effect is gained when a player is exposed to rain or submerges waist-deep or further in the water. This effect will stay with the player for as long as they are in the rain or water and will last for 120 seconds once out of the rain or water, but this timer will reset if the play is made wet again.
The Wet Effect mildly lowers stamina and health regeneration and makes the player weak against Frost or Lightning attacks, although, it does make the player resistant to fire. Also, the Resting Effect cannot be applied whilst the Wet Effect is active, and the Wet Effect will also apply the Freezing Effect to the player if they are in the Mountain biome.
9 Corpse Run
Corpse Run is an effect that reduces the stamina usage for running and jumping for 50 seconds after retrieving all items from their grave, as well as making the player more resistant to Blunt, Slash, and Pierce attacks.
It does not, however, override any encumbrance the player may have, and it does not apply if some items are left inside the grave.
8 No Skill Drain
The No Skill Drain Effect is applied upon a player’s death, providing a duration of 10 minutes in which the player will not lose any XP upon further deaths. Unlike other status effects, No Skill Drain stays with the player even after logging out and remains for the full 10 minutes in-game.
7 Sneaky Effect
The Sneaky Effect, which provides a 25% increase in the Sneak skill, is only gained when the player is wearing all four pieces of the Troll armor set. The Sneak skill reduces stamina usage when sneaking, which reduces your visibility to hostiles.
6 Smoked
The Smoking Effect will be applied when a player is standing inside a cloud of smoke and will take 2 damage per tick until exiting the smoke. This effect is quite the silent killer as it damages without the usual sound cue and it can be easy to accidentally fill your shelter with smoke if you have a campfire or other heat source inside.
5 Freezing
The Freezing Effect will be gained in the Moutain biome unless the player is wearing Frost Resistant armor or has consumed an item that provides Frost Resistance.
This effect reduces stamina regeneration significantly, removes health regeneration, and does one damage per second, but increases Fire resistance. Also, if the player is wet in the Mountain biome then no amount of frost resistance will protect them from the Freezing Effect.
4 Frost Effect
The Frost Effect can only be applied through attacks, either by Drakes or the boss-level Mordor, and reduces the movement speed of the person affected. As the duration of this effect decreases, so does the speed penalty, and the player can wear Frost Resistant armor or consume Frost Resistance Mead to reduce the overall duration of the effect.
3 Poison
The Poison Effect is a direct result of enemy attacks or poison arrows and damages the player over time using Pure damage, which means it can’t be “cured” before the duration is up. The player can, however, reduce both the damage inflicted by the effect and its duration by consuming Poison Resistance Mead before fighting enemies that can afflict Poison.
2 Burning
The Burning Effect occurs when the player comes into direct contact with fire, either from walking into a fire or getting hit by a fireball, setting their character aflame for 5 seconds. This can be used as a rather painful way to drastically reduce the duration of the Wet Effect 60 times faster than usual.
As this effect deals Pure damage, Fire Resistance will only reduce the amount of damage caused to the player per second, but the duration of Burning can be reduced 6 times faster whilst in water.
1 Resistance
Resistance can reduce the damage taken from negative status effects and attacks. There are many types of Resistance, one for each negative status effect and attack type; Blunt, Fire, Frost, Lightning, Pierce, Poison, Slash, and Spirit. Players can gain Resistance from wearing armor, consuming mead, positive status effects, and Bonemass or Yagluth Power.
