Embracer Group just published its 2021-2022 fiscal year report, and as with most companies in the video games industry right now, Embracer made a boatload of cash. Net sales for the past fiscal year were up 102% to SEK 6,448.3 million, with most of Embracer’s publishers (THQ Nordic, Deep Silver, Coffee Stain, and Saber Interactive) reporting increased profits.

Fourth-quarter results were particularly good for Embracer, with net sales increasing by 119%. Coffee Stain accounted for nearly half of that increase, and it was all thanks to a little Viking survival game that came out of nowhere.

“The quarter was driven by the release of Valheim, selling more than 6.8 million copies during the period,” wrote Embracer. “This truly amazing game continues to find new players globally and we expect another 1.0-1.2 million copies to be sold before the close of the current quarter ending June.”

Valheim has been wildly successful ever since launching to Steam Early Access in February, climbing from a million units in its first few days on sale to over five million in its first month, but it’s not the only game that Embracer noted in its fiscal report. Embracer’s publishers also reported 2 million copies of SnowRunner sold, 2 million units of Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Re-Hydrated sold, and over a million units of the Destroy All Humans! remake.

Embracer expects that success to continue into the next fiscal year, too. Across all its development studios and publishers, the group has 160 projects in development, with two-thirds of them based on “new IPs or games based on IPs we plan to revitalize.” The company has an ambitious plan to complete over 90 of those games before the end of March 2022, including games from Gearbox and Aspyr.

To top it all off, Embracer noted that Deep Silver has brought back beloved TimeSplitters developer Free Radical to create the first new TimeSplitters game since 2005. They’ve even managed to snag original studio founders Steve Ellis and David Doak for the project.

Embracer’s next big success story might just be Biomutant. Tune in next week to find out.
