A couple of months ago, we were introduced to Valheim VR courtesy of creator Brandon Mousseau. This mod allowed you to play Valheim with a VR headset, but he didn’t have the expertise to implement motion controller support, so you still had to play with a mouse and keyboard.
It was cool for the immersion factor, but the real draw of VR is being able to move your head and body to interact with the virtual environment. Having to twitch your mouse to see something really didn’t provide the full VR experience.
That’s changed thanks to the help of Maddy25, who was instrumental in bringing motion controller support to Valheim VR. “We’ve added full motion controls for Oculus Touch and Index controllers,” writes Mousseau on the mod’s NexusMods page. “We also have Vive bindings, but these controllers have limited inputs and neither of us have these to test with - we would greatly appreciate any feedback and we’ll try our best to tune these so they work well.”
Helpful images have been posted to provide players with the default bindings for the Oculus, Index, and HTC Vive. The mod also features upper-body tracking via VRIK, which also includes finger tracking so you can both wave goodbye or flip the bird in multiplayer games.
Not only that, controls have been updated to allow the full range of motion for firing a bow and arrow, throwing a spear, or fishing. Melee combat is performed by equipping a weapon and swinging wildly, or by unequipping your weapons and punching bare-fisted.
But as like last time, there are a few things still being worked on. First, motion control is only done via the joystick, so moving about your room won’t actually change your position in-game. That’s apparently the next feature set to be added in a later update.
Second is online multiplayer, which can look a little freaky if you’re playing with non-VR friends. “If you play on a multiplayer server with non-VR players, they will see weird things like your character will have no upper-body animation and they’ll see damage appearing in front of you when you do things like attack,” Mousseau warns.
To get around this issue, he recommends playing multiplayer-only with other VR mod users or disabling the mod with non-VR users.
Valheim VR is available now over on NexusMods.
