VALORANT, the much anticipated first-person shooter from Riot Games, has been hit with poor reviews on Metacritic after i’s full release on June 2, 2020.
VALORANT has been hyped up by Riot and those who played its beta to be the competitive player’s FPS, designed to be the next esports hit. However upon its full release, VALORANT has been taking a beating from reviewers, as they believe the game to be “over-hyped” and “bad.”
On the day VALORANT was released, the game was met with a harsh 3.4 user-score on Metacritic. One reviewer wrote “Back to 2008! This game has not brought anything new to the gaming community. Does not have graphics and original gameplay.” Another wrote “VALORANT is, at its core, a slower, simpler CS:GO clone…". Reviews in this manner, flooded Metacritic and gave VALORANT the 3.4 user-score mentioned above.
However, on June 3rd, just one day after the games launch, that user-score has already risen to 4.9. While a 4.9 user-score may be nothing to brag about, it does say clearly that VALORANT is better than the original user-score of 3.4. This rise in user-score could also mean that players who enjoy VALORANT saw all the hate that the game was attracting and took it upon themselves to voice their opinions about the game.
Players of VALORANT have also said that this initial flood of bad reviews is due to trolls and people who don’t put time into new games. One person on Twitter even said “Probably just that losers that like to hate on new games just like sh**ting on them in reviews while the people that actually like the game just play and never review lol. It’ll probably rise with time.”
Overall, while VALORANT was hit with initial bad reviews, only time will tell if the game is genuinely disliked by the larger community; or if these initial bad reviews were in fact just from “trolls” and those who don’t put time/effort into games. Critic reviews will also come soon, and that should lend a different perspective.
