Patch 0.49 has brought ranked play to VALORANT, and while most players are enjoying it, some are frustrated how quickly the game assigns a rank to groups of players, preventing them from queuing together due to their rank disparity. According to the players in this thread on Reddit, it takes as little as a single game for the system to assign ranks.
With that said, we do not have a full understanding of how the game is assigning rank. While ranked mode officially assigns rank through individual and team performance in a game, there is also likely the use of a hidden MMR based on unranked games that helps in determining the rank.
While players may not appreciate that they cannot play in ranked mode with their friends of a different rank, this is most certainly working as intended. No players want to queue into a 5-person premade match where one or two of the players are far more skilled than the rest and carry the match to victory.
Luckily, we have a few tips that can help players who are not as highly ranked as their friends to overcome this issue in order to queue up again. These include:
- Lose less games Win more games
We aren’t exactly sure how the VALORANT ranking system factors individual performance, but getting more kills probably helps as well. If these options aren’t viable, there’s not much one can do to play with their higher-skilled friends.
