If you’re going to make a multiplayer shooter, it’s important to make sure that bullets actually hurt enemies when they hit them. That sounds simple, but the 0.5 update for VALORANT seems to have botched that one little detail.
Reports are coming in from players all over the internet that hits aren’t registering properly, even when it’s clear that bullets, arrows, and other projectiles are hitting their targets.
The reports aren’t just from salty players pretending that their failures are the result of bad programming. There’s video evidence all over the place that seems to show headshots that don’t kill opponents.
There’s more than just a few complaints, also. Players on the VALORANT subreddit have been sharing their experiences since the patch was released on May 12.
VALORANT is in beta, so normally this kind of problem wouldn’t be that big of a deal – it’s pretty common for these kinds of things to crop up before an official release, and developers usually diagnose the issue and come out with a quick fix.
It really does look like Riot messed something up with hitboxes in 0.50 … from r/VALORANT
But 0.5 was confirmed to be the last beta patch. We won’t know whether Riot Games successfully addressed the issue until after its official worldwide release on June 2.
Of course, as with everything on the internet, there has been wild speculation about what the cause of these problems might be. Players have suggested the issue might stem from lag, issues with the way the hitboxes are designed, or even changes to the way that guns work in the game.
There’s more than just hit registration issues that Riot Games has to deal with before the full release. Players have been reporting unstable FPS and disabled blood effects in the latest patch as well.
Here’s hoping that Riot can get everything fixed before the game goes gold next week.
