Valve President and CEO Gabe Newell just came out and said that the Xbox Series X is the better console on live television.
Gaben is still in New Zealand, as we discovered last week, and he’s apparently been doing the media tour to thank New Zealanders for letting him wait out the coronavirus pandemic in their idyllic island nation. His latest stop on current affairs show The Project had him answer some difficult questions, including which console you should buy this coming holiday season.
When asked by one of the hosts which console is better, the Xbox Series X or the PlayStation 5, Gaben didn’t mince words. “Oh, the Xbox,” he said without providing any explanation. When prompted by a different host to elaborate on why he feels that way, Gabe simply said: “Uh, because it is.”
Perhaps the fresh, non-polluted air and beautiful beaches of New Zealand have gone to Gabe’s head. But to actually clarify for the audience, Newell reiterated his position as the head of a company that only deals with PC gaming and not consoles.
“I don’t have a stake in that race. Obviously, we do most of our development on personal computers, but of the two I would definitely go with an Xbox.”
While Gabe is certainly a respected figure in PC gaming, he’s also opposed in his view by other respected figures and people who are actually working on PS5 and Xbox games rather than merely observing from afar. As usual, we’ll have to wait for the Xbox Series X and PS5 to release before we can declare one the winner.
If you’d like to read about a technical comparison between the two consoles based on currently available specs, check out our previous coverage here. So far, the Xbox Series X is winning in the teraflops department, but the PlayStation is said to make up ground on efficient software.
As for Gabe, he’s expected to stay in New Zealand where he’ll put on a free concert for those lucky Kiwis to enjoy, what with their completely open economy and zero cases of community transmission. Must be nice.
