Volcanoids - the steampunk survival drilling title from developer Volcanoid - has been available since January of last year in Steam’s Early Access program, and it’s clear that the developers are hard at work to give players everything they may want in a volcano-drilling survival adventure.
This week, a new update was added to the game, bringing with it the ability for players to join up in crews of two to four people for co-op scavenging, base-building, and drilling action.
The co-op update will allow crews to choose and upgrade their drillship stations, all while roaming the island, searching for resources, and fending off the robots that attack their ship. Craftable bunk beds have also been added to allow players to rest their in-game characters when not playing and jump right back into the drilling action wherever the drillship might have been moved to by another crewmate.
If you’re new to the world of Volcanoids, players are tasked with exploring and surviving on an island that is full of volcanic eruptions caused by mechanical beings. To do so, players need to build and control a movable drillship base that is able to dive below the surface to avoid the deadly eruptions that take over the surface for certain periods of time. Along the way, players can upgrade their ships, while battling any of the hostile creatures they encounter.
Beyond the addition of co-op play, the update also brings with it new buildable drillship upgrades, game improvements, and bug fixes.
Volcanoids already looks great even in its Early Access state. The developers indicated that the game was initially planned to remain in Early Access for at least two years, meaning we still have the rest of 2020 to go. If this update is a sign of things to come, Volcanoids could be one of the next go-to games within the survival adventure genre.
To celebrate the release of the co-op update, Volcanoids will be on sale with a 25% discount on Steam from now until May 27th - just in time for you to take advantage of the long weekend.
