SNK is full of surprises. After releasing the nutty For Honor crossover for Samurai Shodown a month back, they’re at it again as there will be a new CG movie based on The King of Fighters. A nearly three-minute-long trailer has been published as well.
It will be called The King of Fighters: Awaken, and is expected to be a full-length feature film that will be shown in China sometime in 2022. The film is being brought out by Joy Pictures, who previously localized the film La La Land for Chinese audiences. The studio will be selling 10 of their productions to the Cannes Film Festival, and King of Fighters: Awaken will be one of them.
Set between King of Fighters ‘95 and King of Fighters ‘97, Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami face off against an ancient evil Orochi. In a series of events, they now have to save a little boy from a terrible fate, and likely, the world.
Despite the relatively unknown animation studios behind this project, Original Force and iDragon Creative Studio, the film does look quite pretty. With cool fire effects and realistic but slightly stylized character models, we’re confident that we’ll get to watch some awesome fight scenes.
The King of Fighters is a franchise that has compelled fighting game players since the NEO-GEO and its release in arcades. One of the leading men from the game, Terry Bogard, became a unique fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with his moves directly translated into the game. Burning knuckle!
We’re looking forward to seeing what’s next from SNK as many were pleased with their most recent fighting game, Samurai Shodown.
