As the fifth anniversary for Tabletop wargame Warhammer Age Of Sigmar approaches, Games Workshop is set to release this year’s edition of the General’s Handbook.
Age of Sigmar took on the mantle of GW’s fantasy focussed wargame, following the discontinued Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Set in the Age of Sigmar, chronologically after the aforementioned prequel, AOS has many of the fantasy races return as well as a host of exciting new factions. The General’s Handbook is a handy tome to have as it contains updated rules and rules clarifications, as well as updated stats for new and old units, and tactical information and strategies.
This issue sees new and updated content for matched, open and narrative game types, and additional rules for hosting multiplayer battles that consist of more than two gamers. For players looking for something a little extra, the Anvil of Apotheosis system provides rules to create your own heroes from the wealth of AOS and Warhammer Fantasy lore, and how to include them in your battle campaigns. This is a ‘house rule’ and while it adds a unique twist to your games you do not have to include them in your games. Just make sure both sides are in agreement before you start playing. You can find more information on creating a hero on the Warhammer Community website. It’s also great to see the rules for epic sky battles, with the inclusion of rules previously published in White Dwarf.
The standard edition of the General’s Handbook 2020 is available for pre-order now from GW and all independent Warhammer stocklists. There is also a limited release Warlord Edition featuring the General’s Handbook 2020 and accessories not found anywhere else. These look to be campaign cards, tokens, and an easy to use game reference. The Generals Handbook 2020 is priced at $35 US, €25, and £20. The Warlord Edition is priced at $75 US, €60, and £45.
There is a digital edition available as well. This will be available through Warhammer Digital. Warhammer Age of Sigmar app users will receive their update a little late this year. This has unfortunately been delayed by the imminent release of Warhammer 40,000 9th Edition and the required app changes to accommodate the new rules.
