There’s a new Warhammer real-time strategy game under development from the makers of Elite Dangerous.

Frontier Developments, makers of Elite Dangerous, have officially acquired the license to Warhammer Age of Sigmar. The company will use that exclusive license to make an RTS game based on the Age of Sigmar setting.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar replaced classic Warhammer (sometimes known as Warhammer Fantasy Battle) back in 2015 as a more simplified and streamlined tabletop wargaming experience. Age of Sigmar focuses more on the narrative aspects of the game so that each battle tells a story that goes beyond mere body counts. A second edition was released in 2018 that further clarified the new rules.

“We are delighted to announce this license with Games Workshop,” said David Braben, CEO at Frontier Developments. “I personally think it’s great news that two such well-established and world-class creative UK companies with global reach are collaborating on a new project. We look forward to working closely with the team at Games Workshop to bring the rich world of Warhammer Age of Sigmar to a wide audience through an immersive and accessible real-time strategy game on both PC and console.”

Although we don’t have any details on the game itself, we do know that Frontier has a tentative plan to get it to market before the end of fiscal year 2023, which means before May 31, 2023.

“As Warhammer becomes an ever-larger brand and our legions of fans around the world look for exciting ways to experience the splendor of our settings, we are always looking for the highest quality partners to work with,” added Jon Gillar, Games Workshop’s Global Head of Licensing. “Frontier is just such a company, with an incredible heritage, and an innovative and highly polished development capability clearly demonstrated by their compelling vision for this game. This will be the first RTS set in the epic fantasy world of the Age of Sigmar, which is the kind of game that Warhammer and strategy fans have been clamoring for.”

Also buried in Frontier Developments’ trading update are two more major release announcements. In fiscal year 2022, Frontier plans to release a “multiplatform game based on an as-yet unrevealed major global IP,” while in the fiscal year 2023 they release a “Formula 1 multi-platform management game alongside the 2022 F1 season.”
