The studio behind free to play Warhammer: Odyssey has released a short clip unveiling the character creator for the upcoming game, and boy, are we excited. It’s been a long time coming, but we’re now one step closer to a beta release with doors opening soon to testers, after a final spit and polish.

Warhammer: Odyssey is based upon Games Workshop’s popular fantasy franchise Warhammer. Specifically set within “The Old World” we see a return to the universe prior to the events that shattered the world into the 8 realms and ushered in “The Age of Sigmar”. This is the same much-loved universe as both the pen and paper-based Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and that of earlier tabletop wargame, Warhammer Fantasy Battle as well as a wide selection of novels and short stories that are available from Games Workshop’s Black Library.

In the exclusive video shared by the folks over at MMORPG.com, we get a glimpse at the character creation process. Fans of the franchise will not be disappointed.

The art direction Virtual Realms has taken is faithful to the source material but is still familiar enough for players of other fantasy focused MMORPGs to feel at home. The character creator, a staple amongst RPGers, potentially betrays a key game-play element. At first glance, it suggests that a class will be fixed to a particular race i.e. Dwarf Slayer or Human Witch Hunter. Whether this remains to be the case in the final release, only time will tell, but this limitation may put off those looking for a more immersing experience and suggests a more ‘arcade’ style of play.

The MMO landscape has changed rapidly over the years. Once dominated by Blizzard’s subscription-based World of Warcraft, subscriber numbers have dwindled as players have sought new challenges in the many F2P games. These have had varying levels of success as they have looked to build a solid revenue model, with many games unable to do so and disappearing without a trace. Even the big franchises, Star Wars: Galaxies and Warhammer: Age of Reckoning struggled to survive.

Whether Warhammer: Odyssey will survive the gauntlet is anybody’s guess, but with a rich universe to play in and a strong storyline, we are in for one hell of a ride. For those hoping for a desktop or console version, don’t get your hopes up. The focus is obviously on mobile, and while the developers have said “Never say never…”, for the moment at least this is unlikely.
