Warzone’s most recent update added sniper rifles to the Gulag which, on the surface, seems crazy for a room so small.
Call of Duty has set Warzone apart from other battle royale games in a number of ways. However, the way in which it has done so that is discussed and dissected most is the Gulag. A prison to which players are sent after being eliminated where they can fight for a second chance in that round.
At launch, the Gulag featured nothing more than pistols and shotguns. It made sense considering the confines of what is a very small room in the grand scheme of things. Players watching the action unfold, as they wait for their own turn in the Gulag, can throw rocks to do damage, and those battling could opt to not use weapons at all and just beat their opponent to death if they so choose.
Warzone needs to stay fresh to keep things interesting though, and Infinity Ward tweaks the game a lot. The trouble is, with a player base as vast as this one, even the slightest of changes will annoy a large group of people. However, this latest change seems to have baffled players more than anything. The addition of sniper rifles to the Gulag.
As has already been explained above, winning in the Gulag is all about close combat. Even if there were no walls whatsoever in the room, a sniper would still be pretty useless against anyone with any sort of experience. Players have been taking to Reddit, telling stories of running up to opponents trying to use a sniper rifle in the Gulag and just using a melee weapon to pick up the win.
The addition of sniper rifles was preceded by SMGs and ARs being added to the Gulag. That seemed crazy enough, so sniper rifles joining the party feels like a step too far, if not two steps. Then again, some players claim ARs and SMGs in the Gulag have grown on them. Perhaps those same players will be saying the same thing about sniper rifles in a few weeks time, at which point IW will probably remove them and change things up again.
