You’ve probably seen this trick in a Saturday morning cartoon somewhere without even realizing the legend behind it, so we’ll hold a bit of a history lesson to start. William Tell was a legendary Swiss marksman and folk hero. He was known to be incredibly accurate with a crossbow, and at one point even split an apple sitting on someone’s head from 50 paces away.

According to legend, that someone was actually his son. In 1307, William Tell was walking through the city of Altdorf when he was arrested for insulting the local duke. The duke said he’d let Tell and his son go so long as he could prove how great a marksman he was by doing the apple trick. He did it, but he was still imprisoned afterward because he’d actually taken two bolts from his quiver–one for his son, and the other to kill the duke if he’d accidentally killed his son doing the apple thing.

Anyway, it’s a great story, and now it lives on in Call of Duty: Warzone thanks to Reddit user dzdaboi.

A friendly enemy used the traditional Warzone language of excited hops and crouches to convey that he wasn’t a threat and instead wanted to play a different kind of game with dzdaboi. A series of bullseyes were sprayed on a tree, and then the friendly enemy again used gestures and hops to tell dzdaboi that he wanted to perform some trick shots with their crossbow.

As gunfire and explosions rang off in the distance, dzdaboi and his newfound friend put crossbow bolts through the bullseye at greater and greater distances. Finally, just as the music in the video reaches a crescendo, dzdaboi attempts a shot from just a bit too far away and skewers his new friend through the head.

I mean, you had to know where this was headed, right?

To be fair to dzdaboi, it looks like he at least repeated the great feat of William Tell without the apple, so we’re not going to criticize their lack of aim on that last shot. At a certain distance, luck plays as much a part as skill.
