After removing Trios again, Infinity Ward has added the mode back to Warzone, but some players still aren’t happy.

For the most part, Call of Duty: Warzone has been a huge hit. Fifty million people played the game during its first month. This is partly because many people are cooped up inside with nothing else to do and thought “why not?”, but also because it’s a pretty terrific addition to what was already a pretty crowded battle royale scene.

What developers Infinity Ward have quickly discovered about battle royale gaming is there’s no pleasing all of the players all of the time. Warzone kicked off with Trios mode and nothing else. It then added Solos a few days later and revealed that other squad sizes were being tested. At that point, so far so good when it came to pleasing its fanbase.

It’s when Infinity Ward started trying to mix up the modes that players hit back. Trios disappeared and was replaced by Quads. After backlash, Infinity Ward reluctantly re-added Trios alongside Quads. This week, Duos made its Warzone debut and Trios disappeared again. Players voiced their displeasure once again and Infinity Ward buckled under the pressure and reversed its decision, just not in the way players wanted it to.

Trios is back in its original form, but Duos is now only available in Warzone’s Plunder mode. Plunder is a respawn mode that is nowhere near as popular as the battle royale mode. What players clearly want is the choice between Solos, Duos, Trios, Quads, and maybe even the Quins mode that has apparently been tested. However, Infinity Ward is reluctant to give players all of that all in one go.

There is good reason for that, too. Infinity Ward’s worry is likely that should it make so many modes available all at the same time, its player base would become too split. Two BR modes at the same time ensures there are plenty of players to go between the two. Add four or even five modes at the same time and that might not be the case. It has two choices, though. Either stick to the plan as much as possible or give players everything they want all at once.
