So that Lego Nintendo thing that leaked yesterday? It’s real, and we got more details to share with you.
Yes, the Lego NES is real. We just got word straight from the Danish toy producer that they’re continuing partnership with Nintendo has produced what could be the most innovative and bizarre product to date.
As we say yesterday, it is indeed a Lego version of the original Nintendo Entertainment System, complete with a bundled copy of Super Mario Bros. But more than that, it actually works. Kind of.
The set includes the NES, a controller, and a replica CRT television with a screen that showcases the pixelated form of old-school Mario. And it actually moves! The screen is actually a flat sheet of Legos that wrap around and rotate with a hand crank. Lego Mario hops up and down based on what’s happening on the screen.
In some ways, it’s even better than the original since it technically never ends.
The Super Mario Bros. cartridge even slots into the NES. Lego’s trailer shows the builder blowing on the cartridge, which would normally be frowned upon but this is a plastic toy and not an actual cartridge with corrodible copper connectors.
And there’s more, of course. You can link the battery-operated Mario figure from the Super Mario Starter Course to add some actual Nintendo sound effects to your plastic model kit.

With the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System, we’re letting them truly indulge in that nostalgia, recreating one of the most-loved consoles of all time so they can see Super Mario from their childhoods once again – and even to share the experience of gaming in the 1980s with their own children.”
The Lego NES will be available exclusively from Lego’s online store starting on August 1, 2020. You’ll have to wait until 2021 for this set to arrive in retail stores, and it’ll have an MSRP of $229.99.
